Walk a mile in his shoes and they’ll show you where you are.

I started to think about The Wizard of Oz and Dorothy and her shoes and when she clicked her shoes together she got transported home.  And I used that as inspiration.  Is it possible to make a pair of shoes that could at least guide you home?

Dominic Wilcox

Dominic Wilcox is a London based artist and designer who created a fully functional pair of shoes that will transport you home no matter where you are in the world. These shoes are called “No Place Like Home Shoes.”  I surely would like to test these out. Part of Dominic’s inspiration came from the movie Wizard of Oz, in which Dorothy clicks her shoes to return home.  The Global Footprint project in Dominic Northamptonshire commissioned Dominic to create these shoes.

To make his creation a reality, Dominic had to think both in terms of technology and design. This is how they work: “After uploading your required destination to the shoes via a piece of custom made mapping software and a USB cable, the GPS, which is embedded in the heel, is activated by a heel click. It then communicates to the wearer via a ring of LED lights to point in the required direction. The shoe with the GPS wirelessly communicates with the right shoe that has a progress bar of lights to show how close you are to the destination.”
