Royce White (and the NBA) are anxious to see how this plays out.
When I come out here I disappear into my own little world. This is my secret fort. I can come out here and let my imagination go wild.
In the 2012 NBA draft, the Houston Rockets selected Royce White to join their team, but as this emotional video from Grantland shows – they took a big risk. Royce suffers from an anxiety disorder and was a risky choice. The mini doc follows him through the days leading up to the draft. Hope was that he could overcome his fear but that doesn’t look like its going to be the case. Human Interest Stories are traditionally “fluff happy pieces” but more and more short documentaries are diving into deeper issues and subjects.
This seems like the beginning of a story where a protagonist struggles with conflict only to triumphantly succeed in the end. But sometimes in real life there is no happy ending. He is a household name in Houston but not for good reasons. Royces may end up as a footnote in NBA history and forgotten as time goes on. He has a disease and is hated for it. His story is ripe for a followup video but for now – here’s the first (and hopefully not final) act in the story of his NBA career.
